Thimbles
A collectible thimble is just that – a basic old sewing thimble that we all know and are used to (if we haven’t actually used a thimble our self while sewing, we have definitely seen a mother, grandmother or other loved one sew at one time or another) that has been made into a collector’s item for one reason or another. This reason could be anything from the thimble being released by a company that specializes in a completely different kind of product entirely, or perhaps the thimble has even been used in the past by somebody famous – ordinary, everyday sewing thimbles can be made into instant collectible thimbles simply because they have been used by actresses and actors or famous musicians or political figures in their lifetime.
Sometimes a collectible thimble makes a statement, and it is this statement that gives the thimble its value as a genuine collector’s item. Maybe the thimble is made out of an extra special material. Copper, silver, platinum and pewter all make for excellent, fully functional sewing thimbles that are also both visually pleasing and expensive to produce. A thimble may be adorned with semi precious stones, beads or other little trinkets which will obviously add to their attractiveness and collectability. Perhaps the collectible thimble in question has been painted up to look like a famous cartoon character, celebrity, or maybe it depicts a small scene of a historic or otherwise memorable event.
Thimbles can even become collector’s item simply by being passed through the family from one generation to the next – this thimble may have little or no value to the average collector, but to you the sentimental value could make it the most valuable and loved piece of your thimble collection. Collectible thimbles can be traded, sold and bought between friends, family members, co workers or colleagues or even at trade shows, conventions and through thimble collecting websites on the internet. This makes it possible to view thimbles from all over the country and the even the world – which makes finding that one specific collectible thimble you have been searching for a breeze.
Whether or not many people realize it, collectible thimbles are still just as popular as ever. Their appeal as both a real, everyday functional tool combined with their ease of customization make them a great collector’s item for everyone both young and old, whether you know how to sew a garment or not.
