Thimbles
For the serious thimble collector, thimble displays
are one of, if not the single most important part of their collection.
Every individual has their own ideal method of putting their thimbles on
display (if they choose to show them off, that is – some do not).
Certain people use a simple ring display in the form of a model hand –
usually black in color, as stated these are most commonly used to hold
or display a woman’s ring when she is not wearing them.
However, thimbles slide on the tips of
these model hand displays just as with your real hand. Some of the more
craft-oriented thimbles enthusiasts take the task of coming up with a
display case on their own – that is to say they construct completely by
themselves. They may use the internet to find plans, measurements and
specifications for any given project, but when it comes down to it they
purchase all of the parts and materials separately and then assemble
them later by hand. This can save a lot of money in the long run as long
as you have the free time to provide in order to save a few bucks.
Others prefer shopping around at craft
stores, retail stores or flea markets looking for that dream case to
display their thimbles. You can find them made out of nearly any
material from glass, wood, plastic, Lucite or nearly any other kind of
material that you can imagine.
Some cases have two, three or even more
shelves inside – some hang on the wall while others sit up or lie flat
on a table. Innovative collectors may even find a glass table that is
capable of displaying your thimble collection while still providing a
fully functional living room table. These sorts of interesting objects
make great conversation pieces when playing host to a guest or guests.
Yet even some people have their thimble
collections sitting out in the open, taking up room on top of kitchen
cupboards, entertainment centers or television stands, or even CD or DVD
racks. Doing so is risky, however, as the small size of the thimbles
make them very vulnerable to getting knocked off onto the floor,
stepped, kicked around or even vacuumed up. Furthermore, leaving your
thimbles out in the open leaves them prone to collecting dust, which
means there, will be even more of your valuable time spent on cleaning
and maintaining your thimble collection.
